the cursed fridge

I smelled something undefinable unpleasant in the fridge last week. The smell refused to go away even though I thoroughly checked the stuff stored in there - and I am usually rather obsessive about throwing away after due by date (the curse of Swedes born late 60ies and onwards). I really hate doing it so I do try my almost best in using up everything foodish I get. But I can do better. I know.

There was just no way one could pinpoint the source of unpleasant smell. So clean and wash the not dirty in the first place fridge. Easy peasy. Job well done. Most of the stuff went back in fridge, neither with a long passed due by date or of weird smell. Happy and content.

Until next morning. Return of the unpleasant smell. Obviously I'm totally clueless to its source. I've sliced a lemon and put in fridge. It did its duty for a couple of days. I think I have to get me another lemon now. Such a weird predicament. And I have no idea how to get rid of the unpleasantness that it has become to even open the fridge.

Unfortunately, I'm kind of the only one in this household with a good sense of smell. Noone else seem that bothered with opening the fridge door. And no, it isn't all in my head or my wee olfactionaries that have gone uprising. Any suggestions to solve issue?

charcoal should help. put a rock of charcoal in there and it should absorb the smell within a couple of days...

Take the panel off the back or front and give it a check. Had a mouse once at the beach house, ugh. Also you may have mildew on coils. If not, check the gasket around the door some time there is mildew in the little rubber folds. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip, Ady! My mother swears by vinegar, but this sounds much nicer.

Can't take the panel off the back if I don't want to do serious damage to fridge and kitchen, but I will definitely check the other things you mentioned, Kari, thanks!

Obviously your fridge is being haunted by a ghost with some sort of odor issue. In the world of paranormal activity fridge hauntings are relatively rare, but they do happen. The ghost is harmless but whilst the door is closed is most likely playing with your food.

As a tip baking soda is wonderful for absorbing odors, but I'm not sure if it also scares off ghosts. As long as you get rid of the smell everything will be cool by the pool.

I once noticed that my trays of ice had absorbed fishy horrible smells in the fridge. I also cleaned and cleaned but the smell never went away until I emptied the ice, washed the trays and made fresh ice. Maybe check if thats your problem. Otherwise maybe a dead mouse or small animal UNDER or BEHIND the fridge??

Ha, ha, that's an original idea, Rob:) I think I must have pleased the ghost though - or served him/her/it the right kind of food -because the odour has kind of faded by itself since I wrote this. Baking soda, will remember and cool by the pool it is!

No ice in my fridge, Forever Feline, and somehow I don't think there would be a mouse alive to hide behind the fridge in this household...;) Luckily the smell seem to have faded now, by itself luckily. Tocuh wood and fingers crossed.
