Saffron Roses

IMG_0890

These saffron muffins must be one of the best examples of that looks can be completely deceiving. They're adorable and I'm so happy I finally found this much coveted design from Nordic Ware, a bit more work tha usual to prepare the mold for the batter, but when the muffins were lifted from the mold I was very pleased with the result.

Can't say I was anywhere near as excited when I took a first bite from a muffin though, the recipe clearly needs a whole lot of adjustment. The recipemaker seems to be oblivious to the fact that one of saffron's features is that it tends to dry out doughs and batters, hence some extra moisture source is essential for a decent result. These yellow beauties were sadly more appropriate to use as building material than to eat. Next batch of muffin roses will be from a more well composed recipe.

  1. Love the molds! I made a saffron cake for the first time a few weeks ago, it was incredibly moist and tasty. I'll post the recipe today.

  4. Me too, Anne, I'd love to have lots of them - if space allowed:) My mum made a saffron cake some weeks ago too, it tasted way better than these muffins. Hate it when recipes show so much promise and then clearly aren't well thought through...:/

Do that, Anonymous, I'm sure you'll be happy with them, the only problem is that they come in so many adorable shapes it's *quite* difficult to chose...:)
