These ab fab cellar window trellises can be found in a picturesque neighbourhood of Stockholm where the streets, alleys and quarters have equally fab names like Kattrumpan (Cat rump), Kattryggen (Cat back), Kattfoten Mindre (Catfoot Lesser), Kattungen (Kitten), Kattörat (Cat ear), Kattgränd (Cat alley)... I haven't been able to find any information as to exactly why the neighbourhood prides itself with such lovely names though.
The name of the 600 meter long winding street in the south parts of inner city Stockholm where these trellises are situated is Bastugatan (Sauna street). The name derives from the fact that until the 17th century there were many "badstugor" (bath cottages) in this area, Badstu' became Bastu (which befittingly happens to mean "sauna"...) in the late 19th century. The area, which is of great cultural and historical value and significance, is brimming with lovely architecture and quaint sightings and more than nice to stroll around in. The walking path on the steep cliffs called Monteliusgången also offers simply grand views over the city and its waters. Definitely a must stop and saunter whether in Stockholm on a quick or long visit or living here.
And again lovely pics. I really want to come to Stockholm one day. The sooner the better. :) Would be great to be able to make it this summer, if only for a long weekend, before I go to Australia for a year...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tardis! Welcome, before or after Australia (that sounds lovely, for a year btw:)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful that people have taken such mundane items as window trellis' and turned them into works of art. Makes one think how often we ignore the opportunity to do so in our daily lives.
ReplyDeleteThat's so true, Kari! I'm sure we would be much happier, content people if we used our creativity more and took care in making details and mundane things beautiful like this. Discovering pretty and unusal things like this does make my heart sing a bit:)
