december 10th - nobel day

IMG_8898

Alas there won't be any fancy three course dinner served in residence of undersigned this evening. Nor will there be any distinguished prize received (darn it, says the knitter of many magical tings. I can't see why there shouldn't be a Nobel Prize in the knitting of magical socks, wristwarmers and other secret things, really).

That said knitter has just ordered a bunch of books though (as it must be deemed prudent to build on book heap for Christmas) including a first (and only or of more remains to be read) novel by Nobel Prize Laureate in literature Herta Müller.

Dinner will probably revolve around beetroots. And cake was eaten yesterday - very close to the Swedish Academy's headquarter one might add. Side note; there's something very lovable about an institution with its main objective being to work for the ’purity, vigour and majesty’ of the Swedish language. Go, Academy! -, I do believe that can be perceived as somewhat reasonably festive too.

Something I've always wondered, the vegetarian guests at the Nobel banquet, what kind of delights do they get served?

Happy Nobel Day ~

  1. Hi Pia,

I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to comment. I came to your blog via Poppy Q. I live in the Washington, DC area of the US and with your wondering about the vegetarian guests at the Nobel dinner, thought you'd like to see the menu for our President Obama's first state dinner held at the White House a couple of weeks ago. Hosting the Indian Prime Minister, the menu was vegetarian.

    Here is what was served:

    - Potato and eggplant salad

    - White House arugula with onion seed vinaigrette

    - 2008 sauvignon blanc, Modus Operandi, Napa Valley, Calif.

    - Red lentil soup with fresh cheese

    - 2006 Riesling, Brooks “Ara,” Willamette Valley, Ore.

    - Roasted potato dumplings with tomato chutney, chick peas and okra or green curry prawns, caramelized salsify with smoked collard greens and coconut-aged basmati

    - 2007 grenache, Beckmen Vineyards, Santa Ynez, Calif.

    - Pumpkin pie tart, pear tatin, whipped cream and caramel sauce

    - Sparkling chardonnay, Thibaut Janisson Brut, Monticello, Va.

    - Petits fours and coffee

    - Cashew brittle

    - Pecan pralines

    - Passion fruit and vanilla gelees

    - Chocolate-dipped fruit

    Sounds quite delicious to me!

Love your blog. Also love winter and snow and would love to be able to visit your beautiful country some day.

    All the best,
    Christine, aka Possumlady

  2. Prawns vegetarian?? It sounds like the "vegetable sandwiches" served in Spanish bars. They are made of chicken or tuna.

  4. thanks so much for sharing that menu, christine! it is mouthwatering and i would love to tuck into everything but the prawns. yummy!

and thanks for visiting and liking it here:) i hope your travel wishes will come true one day!

well, gen, it looks like the prawn part was optional at least. strange how ignorant too many people seem to be about what's vegetarian and what's not. i have heard of salmon being the 'vegetarian option' in menus too. hilarious or plain sad, i'm not sure...
