Castle Spotting - Lauriston, Edinburgh

Lauriston Castle, in the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland, is one of those exemplary places that actually has free admission to the grounds. If not exactly a castle in looks, more of a pretty mansion house, Lauriston at least gets and A+ as far as admission without cost goes.

Built in the 16th century, rebuilt over the years and since the 1920ies it has been in nation's trust. It has a very peaceful and vast garden area and a grand view over fields and the Firth of Forth - though a view that doesn't include Forth Railway Bridge alas.

Perfect for leisurely strolls, running - well, for those inclined to that completely unappealing way of exercise... - and picnics. With its perfect lawn Lauriston is also the home of the Edinburgh Croquet Club.

For garden buffs there's of course quite a lovely one which also includes green house and Japanese garden. And oh yes, mustn't forget, there are lots of sheep roaming the nearby fields. That's another extra plus as far as I'm concerned.

The grounds are open all year around from 9 am to dusk, if you want a peak inside the mansion there's, naturally, a fee and the opening hours are slightly more restricted. Lauriston Castle is situated about four miles northwest of Edinburgh city centre at 2A Cramond Road South, Davidson's Mains.

Great pics! How photos from Edinburgh warms my heart. Used to live there and still miss it every day. But Sweden isnt that bad of course, we got out little ruby wooden crofts and nice fireplaces, haha.. ;)

  6. Thanks, Pixiekatten! Oh I miss it too, without having lived there but I fell in love with it the first time I went there, but as you say, Sweden isn't half bad either:)
