happy waffle day 2015

waffle at wij

To be honest I'm tad fed up with waffles at the moment (and not only because we ate some a couple of days ago), so despite it being the distinguished waffle day (Våffeldagen) in Sweden today I haven't eaten any.

But if you love waffles I hope you've stuffed your face with as many as you want -

happy waffle day one and all!

waffle buffet at the film factory

waffle buffet, portvaktsstugan filmstaden råsunda, march 22, 2015

Buffet food isn't my cup of tea in general. Apart from food waste (which seems quite obvious with most buffets) I'm simply not a big enough eater to make justice to the spread or price. Today I made an exception to my no-buffet-rule.

For a waffle buffet - a pre-celebration of the Swedish Waffle Day on March 25 - at classic Swedish film grounds. Filmstaden Råsunda, the movie factory in the Stockholm suburbs built in 1919 where film legends like Great Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Ingmar Bergman began their careers. On the grounds are several restaurants situated and one of them is Portvaktsstugan (The Door-keeper's cottage). A sweet 1920ies style cafe opened weekends only.

The perfect cosy corner for waffle eating, wouldn't you agree?

The buffet was lovely, cute and colourful but in the end I always chose fruit and whipped cream or ice cream for waffle topping (I wish they were vegan and non-dairy though). I'm just not keen on peanut butter and candy, caramel sauces and fluff, liquorice and marshmallows. Too sugary for me.

I had three waffles, all with bananas and a dollop of whipped cream. I tried to vary them a bit but I admit, not very successfully. They left me very full and even a bit nauseous. The reason for that is most likely the whipped cow's cream. By now I've realised that dairy just isn't good for me. Still, sometimes I can't resist.

But all and all, a lovely round off to the weekend. And awesome week.

happy waffle day!

IMG_4352

March 25, Waffle Day in Sweden again. But to be honest I don't think I'm up to making waffles for dinner today. It's been a lovely day though including a very sunny soup for lunch. An eating experience is so much better with pretty looking plate, wouldn't you agree?

This year's March 25 was also the premiere of the first Swedish vegan food magazine. How awesome is that?! I snatched a copy of course and it looks grand and full of interesting things including wonderful photos. And it's indeed a relief not having to sort through flesh recipes and nasty adverts for things I'd never eat. Fresh, fun, colourful and mouthwatering, can't wait to try something out.

Edit: given I can find vegan food items not containing palm oil, not a mean feat...

Hope you get all the waffles you deserve today!

happy waffle day ~

Untitled

It's been a lovely Waffle Day, but so far sans waffles for me (I know, shocking!). In fact I haven't had any waffles since this rather splendid one in Gdansk last summer, Belgian waffle stylee rather than the one we usually have in Sweden. I hope your day has been a waffle eating kind of day, celebrated in style.

Weather today has been sunny, blue skies, around +5C but rather chilly winds. If you'd like to compared weathers on previous waffle days I suggest you read last year's post. If not, that's alright, have an extra waffle instead!

one day after the waffle day

070905 001

Yesterday the Daylight saving coincided with the Waffle Day (Våffeldagen) in Sweden. Yes it is awesome that we have such a day - like with Fat Tuesday and Cinnamon Bun Day etc - and yes we did have waffles, but not very nice ones. Thus I won't be writing any praise about the waffles per se, but more muse a bit about the weather. The weather on Waffle Day, March 25, these past six years. Since blogging is not only good for the soul, sharing, therapeutical and so forth, but also a great way to remember the weather.

The weather is the weather, being weather and in general I'm not very interested in it, in case it isn't very atypical for the season, which it tends to be more and more of course. Sadly so. But I've found it quite amusing these past few years, how people keep complaining about having crappy, rainy Swedish summers when in fact they've been overall rather gorgeous, albeit a bit too warm for my liking, but no way near complainable due to rainy. Thus my only conclusion is that people like to complain. And if they can't complain about something really tangible and real, the poor (only figuratively of course) weather gets the blame. End of side note.

So here it is -

2007 - the waffles were great and so was the weather, amazing really. I wore shorts and we sat on the terrace having tea and waffles. Not the least bit snow in sight.

2008 - freezing snow, icy streets...

2009 - I'm sure the waffles were great, but I can't remember the weather, if it had been shorts and sun I think I'd remembered though

2010 - had fantastic almond waffles, must remind myself to make them again, soon, but the weather was snowy and cold

2011 - the waffles were good but the snow was falling

This year the weather was definitely more like 2007 than the rest of the other wintry Waffle Days. Blue skies, sunshine, perhaps not shorts weather, but still lovely. I hope the weather sticks. And I'm thinking I should make an effort and make some nicer waffles next weekend instead.

Have a good week,
the last of March,
another month has flown past!

happy waffle day ~

011

Today we celebrate Waffle Day (Våffeldagen, våffla = waffle, dag = day) in Sweden. All because of a lingustic slip up, to be grateful for. As it is a rather charming and kind celebration, like Fat Tuesday and Cinnamon Bun Day.

I hope you get waffles warm and served the way you like them, I'm gaving mine with raspberry jam, apple sauce and whipped cream. It will be a delightful way to start the much wished for weekend.

It would have been extra nice if today had been like March 25 was in 2007, alas it's not, as I'm writing this snowflakes are slowly falling...

Happy Waffle Day,
happy weekend!

happy waffle day

IMG_5855

March 25, as it is today, is a proud day in Sweden, as we celebrate the distinguished Waffle Day. 2007 we could enjoy this day in shorts and eating outdoors. Needless to say this is very much not the case alas this year.

Whether in Sweden or not, I hope you have an overall lovely day and get your waffles just the way you want them (me I prefer them to be of a more pancakey consistency rather than crispy)

a saturday waffle

I rarely eat waffles, other than certainly on the annual Swedish Waffle Day, but on those rare occasions that I do have an waffle I most always think 'as this is so good and simple to make why don't I make - serve - have it more often?'.

My personal Saturday won't involve a planned waffle intake, but if it was it would definitely be served with whipped cream and blueberry jam.

A Tiny Case of Retail Therapy

First of all, it's flipping crazy that one year ago on Lady Day a k a the Swedish Waffle Day it was sun, green grass, being able to eat those waffles on the porch wearing shorts... One year later it's freezing snow and slippery streets. Alas.

IMG_0545

Now, with today's whine out of the way, let's continue with a slight case of retail therapy. Only very useful things of course. Must-have-things in the inexpensive price range. First out is a lovely little plate for tea bags - well, I consider it to be a teabag-plate, anyway - from the small Swedish Stockholm-based company/shop Yorrik. The name derives from Hamlet's court jester, the famous to-be-or-not-to-be-skull.

They mainly sell baby/children clothings but also household items and pottery. Small scaled, handicraft, ecological thinking, just the way I like it. My aim when entering the shop, which I'd thought of for ages, was to find a suitable gift for a friend's daughter - I opted for an adorable bright orange jersey Yorrik cap (much appreciated by the tiny gift-reciever). And then I stumbled over the pottery sale and ended up with this must-have-teabag-plate. You can never have to many of those. Period.

The Yorrik pottery range is made in collaboration with the pottery at picturesque summer trip islet in the Stockholm archipelago, Fjäderholmarna (fjäder = feather, holmarna = the islets). A lovely place definitely well worth a visit, and not only for the wonderful restaurants and the handicraft studios.

The other must-haves are simply towels. Size small. One colourful with chickens, perfect for the Easter kitchen. I'm not much for primming, but a new towel and some tulips, oh that's just a perfect touch. This one I found at the big department store, Åhléns, at a measly price.

The other two are perfect small terry towels for the toilet, with my childhood favourite Swedish cartoon character, the honeyloving bear Bamse, which I wrote a bit about here. Suddenly using the toilet-facilities is so much more appealing, when you can wipe your washed hands with either pink or blue smiling Bamse, don't you agree? These towels, and a whole range of Bamse-items, can be found at the Swedish home textile chain, Hemtex

sunshine and waffles

Today has been a day so sunny and warm that I can actually relate to the new daylight saving-time. The very first day of the year when we could enjoy lunch outside on the porch and having the door to the garden opened - immensely popular amongst the feline family-members!

Yesterday was the Swedish waffle day (Våffeldagen), which is an annual event on March 25th, Lady Day (Jungfru Maria bebådelsedag/Vårfrudagen). A day which means nothing to me in the more religious sense. And the funny thing is that perhaps the eating of waffles that day is sort of a mistake from the start, that the word Vårfru (= our lady/spring lady) has become Våffel = våffla. So the lady has become something that we serve on a plate and enjoy eating instead.

We didn't have any waffles yesterday, but for lunch today, in the sun, on the porch. With whipped cream (icecream is equally good), blueberry jam and apple/ginger jam. And tea.
The tea in this particular case deserves a few lines. I don't need to go into the fact that I'm a tea-aholic, again, but even if I buy and get a lot of tea in different shapes and brands I also tend to stick to my favourites and sometimes forget about the rest... The tins are always nice to have anyway, especially if they're bought on a nice holiday. And this was. But quite a few years ago, and the last day of consumtion was actually...09/2002...

The tea-leaf-tin from Reid's Palace, Madeira (afternoon tea) that had its last date in 2005 was tasteless and was thrown away. The tea from Gorreana, Azores (orange pekoe) that was far from last date, had the same problem and went into the bin also.

But apparently third is a charm, or perhaps it's that certain kind of German quality once again, and this Earl Grey tea from the amazing department store KaDeWe in Berlin (where I really recommend you visit the Le Buffet restaurant at the top of the store, both fun and tasty) was absolutely fine, even nearly 5 years after its last date...!

PS No kittens as yet. Apparently I've been more off than usual counting the days... DS
